Here's the 'Smiling City'.... Cedar Falls had recently painted the water tower not far from our house, and I decided that would be a good costume. Kinda cute, since it's just cardboard with some paint...
And, here is the same costume, and I think we must be going to where it will be judged... not sure what happened after that....if it won anything, but that is Diane inside the costume.
And, unfortunately, I don't have any photos of the best of all...the time my three kids and Joel, our neighbor, dressed up as the characters from 'The Wizard of Oz.'
Doug was the Scarecrow. I had him wear a pair of jeans, and a long-sleeved plaid shirt. He had a straw hat, I think, and I glued straw inside of his cuffs in both his pants and shirt, and maybe around his collar, and inside the brim of the hat...I'm just not all that sure, since I have no photos to remind me. But, the poor kid had the worst of it, because straw is very itchy!
Diane was dressed as 'Dorothy' and she had a dress and some old shoes that I had spray-painted red and glued red sequins or glitter all over them. She wore her hair in pigtails and carried a basket with a stuffed toy dog in it. Dave was the 'Cowardly Lion' and he wore a brown long-sleeved t-shirt, brown jeans and a hood I had made for him. It was brown and had brown yarn sewn in loops all around the face opening, and in rows across the surface of the hood, He also had a braided yarn tail with a 'tassel' on the end.
Joel's costume was a cardboard box, spray-painted silver, and he wore an upside-down funnel as his hat. He was, of course, 'The Tin Man.
Well, they were all very cute as a group, but unfortunately, the parade downtown was sorted into ages, so the kids were not able to walk together. That sort of ruined the whole idea, since one without the others made less sense.
But, at the judging of the costumes, Dave won a prize anyway (probably because he was so young and so cute...) I should have gone down with them to make sure they were allowed to walk together. We could have even just walked at the end of the parade on our own, but I didn't think of that...
Another time, I made big papier mache heads (strips of newspaper glued over huge, heavy-duty black balloons, and allowed to dry, then painted with faces). The kids wore heads of Linus, Peanuts, and Lucy (Diane was Lucy, and she carried a box with two thin boards holding up a sign above it saying 'The doctor is in. 5 cents.') I don't remember if Joel was in that group or not, but the costumes were very cute, and I'm sad I don't have photos of them...
Stayed tuned for more fun and games...
